Infusing Autumn with Simmer Pots

By Rebecca LeMar

The smells of each of the seasons stick with us and inspire us. Make a gift jar full of autumn scents to gift to your Thanksgiving guests or spread some love to your neighbors. Beyond scent inspiration, children will observe what sinks and floats, they’ll practice pouring, use chopping skills and experience the joys of homemade gift giving.

What you’ll need:

  • Lemons, limes or oranges
  • Cinnamon Sticks
  • Whole cloves
  • Apples
  • Nutmeg
  • Vanilla extract
    • NON FOOD Ingredients
  • String/Yarn to decorate mason jar
  • Cardstock to make a Tag
  • Mason Jar

Put on an apron. Let children pour 1-2 cups water in a Mason Jar. Have a supply of ingredients ready to pick and choose from on a tray or table. Children can chop the apples, break cinnamon sticks with their strong hands and grind whole nutmeg seeds for more involvement and to add movement (Even 2 year olds could do this with a proper lesson). Let children fill the jar with any combination of the above ingredients. Go for a Spiced Citrus Fusion (apples, citris, whole cloves, cinnamon sticks), Orange October Spice (cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, orange, vanilla) or Apple Crisp scent (apple, cloves, vanilla and cinnamon).

Once the jars are full, make gift tags with card stock. Let children decorate the card on one side. On the other side, write the directions: Add the contents of this jar into a saucepot and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer. Refill with water as needed. Simmering time between 1-2 hours. Enjoy!
