Silly Slime

I haven’t had much time to be a creative, fun mama this week and decided we needed to start the weekend with a bang. Silly slime (commercially called Gak) is one of those projects with huge bang for the time buck. It’s gooey, runny, solid, scary, fun, slimy and incredibly addictive to play with whether you are 3 or (ahem) 32. And the best part is that it only takes a few ingredients and even less time to make.

Have fun!

Silly Slime

recipe taken from Lotions, Potions and Slime, by Nancy Blakey

Ingredients

1 cup Elmer’s glue (I used a generic brand and it worked fine)

1 cup warm water

food coloring

4 cups warm water

¼ cup Borax (available in the laundry section of any major grocery store)

Have your child shake the glue, warm water and food coloring in a jar with a tight-fitting lid, mixing well. Dissolve the borax in the warm water in another jar or pitcher.

In a clean jar or bowl, add three parts of the colored glue mixture (we used an 1/8 cup measuring scoop because that’s what we had handy, but you could use a tablespoon or similar-sized measure). Have your child get a clean spoon ready and add one part borax water. Mix and enjoy!

This recipe makes a TON of silly slime. Like a toddler’s head-sized amount. You can save each element (glue mixture and borax water) separately and mix up a batch whenever you want. Or, if you have kids like mine, they will want to make up batch after batch until you are left with a huge pile of the stuff. Store in a airtight container until it loses its elasticity. And if you make it with your 18-month-old, just make sure she doesn’t eat it.
